Members demand a budget for working families

May 20, 2008 - Over 250 members and leaders from across the state gathered in Springfield on Tuesday to make sure our elected officials prioritize working families in the 2009 budget. Following a march to the Capitol, we met with members of the Illinois House and Senate to explain the need for full funding of the services our consumers and families depend on.

SEIU members and staff spent May 6 making sure Indiana voters got to the polls for the presidential primary. Over 250 members and staff in Gary and Indianapolis took to the streets to knock on doors, hand out fliers and make sure that no one missed their opportunity to vote for the country’s next president.

Members Vote YES to New Union!

The members of SEIU Locals 4, 20 and 880 overwhelmingly voted yes for a new, strong health care union

Vote count group  Nearly 13,000 health care and child care
  workers voted to unite into the country’s
  largest health care union local, SEIU
  Healthcare Illinois & Indiana, on April 15.
  Members approved the new union by a
  margin of 97% to 3%. The votes for
  unification and a new constitution still
  have to be certified by SEIU President
  Andy Stern, which is expected to happen
  in late June or early July.

Over 650 health care and child care providers from SEIU Healthcare Locals 4, 20 and 880 came together in Springfield to rally for quality care. This was the first event uniting workers who will soon vote to create SEIU Healthcare Illinois & Indiana – a 90,000-member union representing hospital, long-term care and child care workers.

More than 250 Local 880 members, staff and volunteers came together for the February 5 Illinois primary election. By reaching out to people in our neighborhoods, knocking on doors in key districts and distributing candidate literature, we helped to generate the largest voter turnout in Chicago in over a decade.


Workers, allies release report on long-term care crisis

Home care workers, disability rights activists and legislative allies released a policy brief on Monday, November 19th calling on the state to head of a coming long-term care crisis by investing in home care workers’ wages, health care and training.

After years of leadership, SEIU Local 880 President Helen Miller and Vice President Lula Bronson retired in June—receiving a heartfelt tribute and send-off from Local 880 members, labor leaders, community activists and elected officials on June 12, 2007.

A dozen SEIU Local 880 members shared their stories as part of the Griot Project, a national initiative to capture the voices and stories of African-Americans in the U.S. All participants' stories are archived at the American Folklife Center of the Library of Congress.
